Q: Can you explain the purpose MTS Criterion systems serve?
Leser: The idea behind these systems is to extend the benefits of decades of MTS expertise and technology across the entire spectrum of testing, from the laboratory to a wide range of industrial settings. The Criterion systems are engineered to work well for research and advanced development, and can also be used for quality assurance and quality control in manufacturing.
Q: How do the features of the Criterion systems bring this concept to life?
Leser: Criterion systems are versatile, so they can meet emerging needs in R&D. They also enable the reliable, accurate and repeatable monotonic testing necessary for ensuring high-volume production quality. They have an overall ease of use that helps test teams establish industry-compliant procedures. And they offer rapid configuration, delivery and setup so they can be up and running quickly. The new Model 45.305 and Model 64.206 exemplify all of these qualities and help expand our offering to address specific customer requirements.
Q: Let’s start with Model 45.305. What should customers expect from this system?
Leser: This particular system is designed for test engineers who want higher force capacity in both displacement and load/strain control with the convenience of electromechanical actuation. Model 45.305 offers force capacities from 100 N to 300 kN, so it can handle high-strength materials such as metals, composites, building components, large fasteners and wood products. Yet it also has the flexibility to test many other kinds of specimens, so teams can use the same system for diverse applications. We expect this model to be a great fit for product development, quality control and R&D applications in the automotive and aerospace industries, as well as in manufacturing and national contract labs.
Q: What are the most significant benefits the Model 45.305 delivers?
Leser: It has a high stiffness, two-column, floor-standing configuration that is extremely rugged, and linear motion guides for superior alignment. It can withstand heavy workloads and maintain the accurate, repeatable performance test teams demand. Like all Series 40 systems, it employs a high-speed, low-vibration electromechanical drive. This direct, non-clutched drive is rated for full speed at maximum force, so it provides smooth transitions across its entire range of speeds. The drive also features precision, pre-loaded ball screws and a world-class, maintenance-free AC servomotor and amp for better torque application.
Q: What about the new Model 64.206? What role does it fill in the Criterion family?
Leser: With the Model 64.206, we now offer force capacity all the way up to 2,000 kN, expanding the Criterion family into higher-force tension and compression testing common in structural and civil engineering. In these applications, test teams are characterizing structural beams, rebar, concrete, piping and tubing, wire and cable, and other high-strength materials. It is an ideal system for universities, government labs and structural engineering labs.
Q: What advantages does the Model 64.206 bring to the customer’s test environment?
Leser: It is an extremely dependable and robust static-hydraulic system. It offers a high-stiffness, six-column load frame configuration, with reliable servo-controlled hydraulic actuation, non-step loading and a “quick return” hydraulic valve for higher throughput. The dual-zone test space accommodates tension on top and compression on the bottom, which helps reduce setup time. Plus, the system comes with extensive standard features, making it an excellent overall value.
Q: What software comes with these new Criterion systems?
Leser: Both the Model 45.305 and Model 64.206 feature versatile, easy-to-use MTS TestSuite™ TW software version 2.0, which now offers optional integration to National Instruments data acquisition hardware. It also includes a standards-compliant template library for ASTM, ISO and many others. Of course, this software platform works with many types of MTS test systems, so test engineers that already use TestSuite software will be very familiar with the interface.
Q: What other elements round out the complete test solution?
Leser: Model 45.305 features high-resolution, digital closed loop controls that are integrated with the load frame. Model 64.206 offers the Integrated Operations Platform, which consolidates numerous components — including digital controls, an ergonomic operator interface, hydraulic power supply and more — into a compact and protected mobile unit. Both models can also be equipped with a complete line of test accessories.
