Planar Biaxial Testing
Components made from metals, alloys and composites are often subjected to complex multiaxial stresses during service. Planar biaxial testing generates more accurate simulations of real-world stress states. Essentially, planar biaxial testing provides a method for investigating in-plane stress states of materials or biaxial loading of design elements, such as the mechanical joint or interface of a component. Specimens are typically cruciform. Tests may involve both tension and low-cycle fatigue, with forces ranging from 25 to 500 kN (5,500 to 110,000 lbf), as well as thermal environments for high-temperature testing.
MTS offers all the technology that test professionals need to conduct highly accurate and repeatable planar biaxial tests. We also bring more than 40 years of experience in materials testing, including domain expertise in the aerospace industry. Offerings specifically related to planar biaxial testing include:
• Planar biaxial testing systems that combine modular load frame technology, centroid
control, advanced alignment and integrated environmental chambers
• Digital controllers with high channel density, high capacity and superior configurability
• Intuitive software that streamlines test design, modification and execution
• Specialized grips, fixtures and other accessories
