Fatigue Crack Growth Testing
Fatigue crack growth tests characterize the rate at which pre-existing cracks in metals, ceramics, composites and other materials propagate as a function of a cyclic driving force, most commonly the range of applied stress intensity. Automation of crack size measurement is frequently done through compliance or potential drop techniques. Tests are often conducted in thermal and chemical environments that represent those seen in service to account for the synergistic effects these factors have on fatigue crack growth. Fatigue crack growth tests generate data that can be used as a basis for setting inspection intervals in components designed for damage tolerance.
MTS offers extensive expertise in fatigue crack growth testing and more than 40 years of experience in all varieties of fatigue testing. We also provide the advanced technology test professionals need to perform accurate, repeatable fatigue crack growth tests. Complete solutions include load frames, software, controllers and fixturing. Specific offerings include:
• Highly stiff, floor-standing servohydraulic load frames for a range of force
requirements
• Intuitive, versatile and user-friendly software with powerful test design capabilities
• Digital controllers with high channel density, high capacity and superior configurability
• Crack opening displacement (COD) gauges, clevis grips, point bend fixtures and
other accessories specifically designed for fatigue crack growth testing
