Axial / Torsional Testing
Materials used in engineered components are frequently subjected to complex multiaxial stress and strain states in service. For certain applications, designs based on uniaxial materials data are insufficient. In these cases, axial/torsional testing simulates the multiaxial stress states of real-world operating conditions more accurately. Specimens are typically thin-walled tubes, and the stress states in the tube walls are mathematically well-known. Tests involve simultaneous application of torque and axial loading with some prescribed phase relationship.
MTS offers all the technology that test professionals need to conduct highly accurate and repeatable axial/torsional testing. We also bring more than 40 years of experience in materials testing, including domain expertise in aerospace and ground vehicles, two industries that rely heavily on axial/torsional testing. Offerings specifically related to axial/torsional testing include:
• Dynamically rated axial/torsional testing systems featuring extremely stiff, high-natural-
frequency load frames with integral axial and torsional actuators
• Digital controllers with high channel density, high capacity and superior configurability
• Specialized software that streamlines test design, modification and execution
• Axial/torsional hydraulic wedge grips for temperatures from -40° to 121°C
(-40° to 250°F)
• All-temperature axial testing hydraulic wedge grips for temperatures from -129° to
540°C (-200° to 1000°F)
• Hydraulic collet grips specifically designed for testing round specimens
