Fretting
Fretting occurs when minute relative motion between two surfaces under load transfers material from one surface to the other, typically due to vibration. Fretting can occur at the fir tree slots where blades mate with discs in a gas turbine engine, for example, or in various types of bolted connections. Frequently, the transferred material is harder than the original, which accelerates abrasion and damage. Fretting is similar to wear, although the motions involved are much smaller. Studies are undertaken to understand and reduce fretting help increase the life of gas turbines, drive shafts and other mechanical components, especially those subject to vibration.
MTS has unmatched domain expertise in fretting tests. Using our technology, test teams can conduct precise, repeatable fretting tests for a wide range of materials. Important offerings for performing fretting tests include:
• Tabletop and floor-standing electromechanical and servohydraulic load frames
for a range of force requirements
• Digital controllers with high channel density, high capacity and superior configurability
• Intuitive, versatile and user-friendly software with powerful test design capabilities
