Improving the resiliency of earthen structures in active seismic zones is a critical component of worldwide Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiatives. Learn how researchers at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (PUJ) in Bogotá are leveraging MTS technology and expertise to explore new methods for protecting vulnerable earth-based historical structures and dwellings across Colombia.
Researchers at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Daniel Ruiz, Natalia Barrera, Yezid Alvarado, Manuela Restrepo, Jesús Villalba) and Universidad de los Andes (Juan Carlos Reyes) employ an array of laboratory-based MTS mechanical test and simulation solutions to study the effectiveness of steel reinforcing on full- and model-scale rammed earth structures subjected to real-world earthquake loading. Insight gleaned from their studies will be used to retrofit and preserve Colombia's rich architectural heritage (90% earthen construction) and inform new ways to safely use highly affordable and sustainable earth-based building materials. PUJ is using their MTS test infrastructure to subject examples of Colombia’s earthen architectural heritage to high-fidelity, real-world earthquake simulations: the strong wall/actuators were used to test a full-scale (6.2m tall) model of historic Barrio La Candelaria construction; while the shake table was used to test a 1:2 scale (3m tall) structure of tapia pisada (rammed earth) construction.
MTS DuraGlide Actuators minimize friction while maximizing reliability and wear resistance. Series 244 linear hydraulic actuators are purpose-engineered for highly dynamic fatigue testing of structures and components.
A
Biaxial Seismic Simulator (Shake Table) provides the longitudinal (X) and lateral (Y) acceleration (1g), velocity (1 m/s), and displacement (± 250 mm) needed for realistic earthquake simulations on specimens up to 10,000 kg.
